Buckhorn Public School garden planting day

What a beautiful day to drive out to Buckhorn and spend the day with the students at Buckhorn Public School. Each class came out to the garden and planted a zillion cool things for the summer and fall!
Yukon Gold and Red Chieftan potatoes, carrots, dill, cucumbers, yellow and green beans, tomatoes, heirloom lettuce and mammoth sunflowers will sprout up in the next few weeks. A big thank you to Jody Whetung, teachers and students who welcomed me into their garden...and fed me ice cream too!
Buckhorn School has available garden plots for families or organizations wishing to grow food over the summer months. If you are interested, please contact Marcy at the PCGN.

North Cavan School gets a garden!

Before the long weekend, students, families and community members in Cavan came out to assemble two beautiful raised beds for North Cavan Public School. The giant wooden beams were generously donated by Discovery Dream Homes.Composted manure from a  local farm, some veggie starts from the Millbrook Community Garden, and top soil will be added this week by the students. Using the library and classroom windows, students await planting their seedling squash, pumpkins and beans. Teachers anticipate using the gardens for projects in the spring and fall. Way to go North Cavan School!

Donating Seedlings?

I have received some requests from a few community gardens looking for extra seedlings ... .Many of our local community gardens operate on small or no budgets, and can use a helping hand!
Did you accidentally plant way too many pepper seeds? Have tomato seedlings taking over your home? Want to donate just a few seedlings to help a gardener grow some great food this season?
Let us know! We will make sure your seedlings get to a good home! Thanks, the PCGN

Earlier this week, we hosted a very exciting meeting at George St. United to start envisioning the development of new downtown community garden. Members of the church community and several folks from the surrounding neighbourhood met to discuss what they would like to see the garden look like, the lay-out, how to go about constructing raised beds, and the creation of a community garden group!
This is an incredible site. It is centrally located, and has an on-site community space & kitchen!! (in George St. United)

Get Growing!!

It’s Gardening Season!
There are still garden plots available throughout town. Let us know if you are still looking for a plot?
The beginning of May is a great time to get out in your garden. You can dig-up a garden, expand an existing garden, add compost & make beds for your veggies.
You can even start planting some things. Carrots, beets, radishes, potatoes & cold hearty greens such as kale & chard can go directly in the gardens, and start veggies such as cucumbers, zucchini & squash indoors. Once the last frost date has passed (typically May 24th) you can start beans right in the garden & transplant your tomato, pepper, eggplant & other seedlings into the garden!

They would like to construct some raised beds on the south lawn. Members of the public are invited to be part of the newly emerging community garden & group.
Are you looking for a downtown location to grow food? Have an idea that could help the project? Have seeds, lumber, soil, time or knowledge that you could donate to the project?

Spring Gathering Photos

People were asked to sit in groups, share a story about a 'Vibrant Community Movement' that they have participated in, and then as a group make a collage that symbolizes their vision of a 'Vibrant Community Movement'
The group was very enthused, and got right to work cutting, pasting, and even moulding plastecine.

Our team of facilitators taking a moment to chat while collages were furiously being constructed.
Thanks to everyone who came out for all their energy & participation
A completed collage
Contributions from the group were recorded for all to see.
A completed collage
There will be a follow-up meeting on Monday May 14th to continue with the development and future visioning of the PCGN.  More details soon.
