Gardening in Schools

Thanks to everyone who came out on Thursday night to our Gardening in Schools discussion. The room was abuzz with lots of excited teachers and the potential for growth in the Gardens in Schools movement!
Our guest speaker, Jody Whetung from Buckhorn P.S. brought along a powerpoint presentation and a wonderfully inspiring story about the garden project that they have undertaken at their school. With a wonderful parent (Maggie Goldsmith) as a champion of the movement, a supportive administration and teachers, and by opening up plots to community members in exchange for maintaining school garden plots over the summer, the project has been a resounding success.Students have the opportunity to explore math, garden design, healthy eating, physical exercise, nature, seed starting, harvesting veggies and making them into soup, and many other curriculum linked opportunities in the garden.

Everyone who came out that night got a chance to learn from this case study and contribute their insights on the various successes and struggles that Gardening in Schools have brought up. We also asked how the PCGN could help make their projects more successful and got some great insight in how we can support Gardening in Schools in the future.

Thanks again!
